The Event Diaries | My First Event

  • TITLE | My First Event
  • EVENT | Bob Bob Ricard – London – October 2025

It was the 14th of October, and the city still carried that crisp autumn edge as I made my way to Bob Bob Ricard for my first CxO Helix event. I arrived earlier than necessary, partly out of habit, partly out of nerves. The private room needed to be just right, enclosed enough for discretion, yet warm enough to invite conversation. In a world where cybersecurity conversations are increasingly shaped by identity-focused attacks, the setting had to match the weight of the discussion.

By the time everything was in place, the room felt ready, almost expectant. Glassware gleamed, chairs were perfectly aligned, and there was a quiet sense that something meaningful was about to unfold.

Then the guests began to arrive.

They came one by one at first, then in pairs, greeted, welcomed, and guided inside. The atmosphere shifted almost instantly. Conversations sparked before coats were even fully off, and the low hum of anticipation grew into something more animated. Drinks circulated, introductions were made, and I found myself subtly orchestrating the seating—placing people together not just by role, but by the potential for shared insight, challenge, and opportunity.

Soon enough, the evening found its rhythm.

The first course arrived alongside the opening presentation. As plates of Scottish smoked salmon were set down, the discussion began to take shape, clients introducing the themes of the night, framing the challenges, and opening the floor. What started as polite listening quickly evolved into engaged dialogue. By the time we moved into the main presentation, the room had come alive. Guests leaned in, exchanged perspectives, and built on each other’s ideas in a way that no slide deck alone could ever achieve.

There’s a particular satisfaction in watching an event like this unfold, not because everything goes exactly to plan, but because it flows. The conversation deepened as the main course arrived: a rich beef Wellington, paired perfectly with wine, anchoring the evening in both substance and experience. It was, in many ways, the peak, where good food, sharp thinking, and genuine connection all converged.

And yet, even as dessert was served and tea and coffee followed, no one seemed ready to leave.
The conversations carried on, unhurried, energetic, and far beyond the time I had expected. I’d arranged a babysitter until 11pm, assuming that would be more than enough. But as the clock slipped past that mark, it became clear the evening had taken on a life of its own.

Somewhere, my babysitter was likely pleased with the unexpected extension.
Eventually, as the night drew to a close, and guests began to filter out, there was a quiet moment of reflection. It struck me then that a successful event isn’t defined by the venue alone, nor by the precision of its planning. It’s in the ease guests feel as they settle in, the depth of the conversations they have, and the connections they carry with them afterward.
